The Best Time of Year to Hike Mexico’s Volcanoes
Dry season, rainy season and glacier season: when to go for clear views, stable snow and safer summit days.
Central Mexico has two seasons that matter to hikers: a dry season, roughly November to March, and a rainy season, roughly June to September, with transition months in between. The volcanoes can be climbed in much of the year, but the experience changes a lot.
November to March: the classic season
Stable weather, clear mornings and the best long-distance views — on a good day you can see Pico de Orizaba, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl from Nevado de Toluca’s summit. It’s colder, especially before dawn, and it’s the recommended window for the glacier on Pico de Orizaba.
June to September: green and stormy
The forests are at their most beautiful, but afternoon storms build quickly and lightning is a real hazard on exposed summits. Day climbs like La Malinche and Nevado de Toluca are still possible with very early starts and a firm turnaround time.
April–May and October: in between
Often pleasant, with fewer people. Conditions can change from week to week, so flexibility helps.
