Mountain Safety & Risk Management

Safety starts before the trail. Preparation, a realistic route and honest conversations matter more than reaching a summit.

A considered plan, not a promise of zero risk

Mountain travel carries risks that cannot be eliminated. Route selection should account for terrain, altitude, remoteness, weather, group experience and time for a safe return. Summit success never outweighs safe return.

  • Uneven or loose terrain, slips, falls and exposure to steep ground.
  • Altitude illness, cold, heat, sun exposure and rapidly changing weather.
  • Road transport, remote locations, unreliable communication and limited or delayed medical access.

Before choosing your hike

  • Discuss recent hiking, fitness, altitude exposure and limitations. Request a private conversation for health information; do not send medical records through general inquiries.
  • Review the assigned guide’s suitability, supervision arrangements, proposed itinerary and contingency options.
  • Ask how weather, access, equipment, communication and emergency arrangements will be reviewed for your departure.
  • Obtain the exact services, traveler responsibilities and insurance requirements in writing before committing.
